WTA leader Naomi Osaka stood on the road to defending the Indian Wells Tournament title in the fourth round after defeating Switzerland’s Belinda Benchic. Japan lost just over an hour from the 23rd to the world rankings with 6-3 and 6-1.
The second-ranked VPA list, Simona Halep, was defeated. She lost to the Czech teenager Marka Vondrusova 2-1 in sets. For the young tennis player who is 19 years old, this was a breakthrough in the carrot over the top five list.
Halep’s defeat means that despite the early elimination, Oscaya on Monday will retain first place on the list of rankings. Indian Wells last year was Osaka’s first big title.
